'Divergent 2' Release Date, Latest News: Robert Schwentke to Direct Sequel 'Insurgent'

News about "The Divergent Series: Insurgent," the purported sequel of 2014's movie adaptation of Veronika Roth's "Divergent," indicates that it will be hitting the theaters sometime in March 2015.

According to Entertainment Weekly, German director Robert Schwentke, best known for the movie "Flightplan," will take over for Neil Burger in the director's chair for the second installment.

"We are excited to announce that we have found the perfect director to carry on the story of Tris Prior and the expanded world of Insurgent in Robert Schwentke," Lionsgate president of production Erik Feig said. "Robert, with whom we have already had a successful relationship, has proven a master storyteller in multiple genres."

Burger, who directed "Limitless," will still take part in "Insurgent" as the executive producer.

Main cast Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Ansel Elgort will reprise their roles as Tris Prior, Tobias Eaton, and Caleb Prior respectively. Additional names to fill in the supporting cast lineup also include Octavia Spencer, Naomi Watts, Suki Waterhouse, Rosa Salazar, Daniel Dae Kim, Jonny Weston, Emjay Anthony, and Keiynan Londsdale.

Fanbolt.com pointed out in their website that principal photography for "Insurgent" already began in Atlanta May 27, 2014.

Summit Entertainment initially announced that a two-part film on Roth's final book of the trilogy series, "Allegiant," will follow "The Divergent Series: Insurgent." "Allegiant – Part 1" will arrive on March 18, 2016 while "Allegiant – Part 2" will hit the cinemas on March 2017.
