DNC 2016 Day 1 Recap: Clinton Speech Time on Thursday; Videos, Cheers and Jeers

The 2016 Democratic National Convention's theme for day 1, "United Together," did not materialize on the first day of the convention in Philadelphia. Powerful names in the party came and spoke, but their presence did little to quench the unrest.

Cheers and Jeers

Looks like it is going to be rough sailing for the Democrats in this convention. After dealing with the issue of the controversial emails that were leaked leading to the resignation of Debbie Wasserman Shultz, now comes the unrest within the party members.

Marcia Fudge, the new DNC chair, had a hard time controlling the crowd, saying, "We are all Democrats, and we need to act like it." Anti-Hillary supporters were rowdy to the point of exasperating Fudge to issue her statement. Fudge has gotten mixed reactions from the crowd, with some cheering her and others booing and showing "No to TPP" and Bernie placards.

Bernie Sanders supporters and party members who were not happy of Clinton's nomination made good their promise that they would not be silent. Even if Sanders told his supporters  to rally behind Clinton, his appeal seemed to be falling on deaf ears. When he asked the crowd to vote for Clinton and running mate Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, he received boos instead. Boos also rang out whenever Hillary Clinton's name was mentioned in speeches.

Stellar Power

Susan Sarandon came in support of Sanders. She was once quoted as saying that Clinton is "more dangerous" than Trump, and during the convention, she was seen holding an anti-TPP card.

Meanwhile, Demi Lovato sang on stage to lend support to Clinton. Comedians like Sarah Silverman and Al Franken took to the stage as well, with Silverman calling the Bernie-or-bust supporters as "being ridiculous."

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker gave an impassioned speech about making an already great America even greater. He ended his 20-minute speech with most of the members of the crown on their feet.

Donald Trump's social media nemesis, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, mentioned Trump's name 22 times in the whole duration of her less-than-20-minute speech, which is the most number of mentions compared with other speakers.

Michelle for the Win

With all the speeches for Clinton, Michelle Obama was the most applauded. The FLOTUS talked about Clinton's experience and how she is the best person suited for the job. In an apparent jab against Donald Trump's incessant tweeting, Obama said that she is for somebody who takes the job of being president seriously and knows that issues affecting the country "cannot be boiled down to 140 characters."
