'Doctor Who' News, Update: Hayley Atwell Wants to BE the Doctor

The star on Marvel's "Agent Carter" TV series, Hayley Atwell, recently expressed her interest in joining BBC's hit science-fiction and action-adventure drama TV series "Doctor Who" in a very essential role.

Atwell, who went over to her social media this week, answered one of the queries from a follower who asked if she'd like to be in the cult-classic show.

Without batting an eyelash, Atwell said that she'd "like to BE Doctor Who" herself.

The 33-year-old "Captain America" actress consequently contributed to the long-running talk regarding the possibility of a female timelord incarnate.

At the San Diego Comic-Con earlier last month, cast Jenna Coleman (who plays Clara Oswald) told the audience that she is quite sure "it will happen at some point."

"I think it's just about casting the right actor," she said (via Entertainment Weekly).

The show's boss, Steven Moffat, also gave his points on the matter by throwing off a slightly suggestive statement:

"My opinion is fairly obvious from the show. I think I've expressed myself about this as clearly as you could … some people are not reading the subtext, because it's too subtle," the EP was quoted as saying (via EW).

But for Sylvester McCoy, having a female doctor could ultimately alter a great deal of the show's dynamics.

"I'm sorry, but no – Doctor Who is a male character, just like James Bond. If they changed it to be politically correct then it would ruin the dynamics between the doctor and the assistant, which is a popular part of the show," he told the The Mirror.

He added that: "I support feminism, but I'm not convinced by the cultural need of a female Doctor Who."

McCoy played the Doctor's character from 1987 to 1989.

Peter Capaldi, the current Doctor Who, clarifies that the Doctor himself/herself is a mysterious creature. "He's a Time Lord and he's not a guy," he went on to point out during the Comic-Con where he and other Doctor Who cast members were part of a panel.

"Doctor Who" Season 9 premieres September 19 on BBC.
