'Downton Abbey' Season 5 Spoilers: Episode 7 Recap, Mary Bids Farewell to Tony

On last Sunday's episode of "Downton Abbey," Edith finds a way to bring Marigold home with some help from an unlikely source, Mary bids Tony Gillingham goodbye, and Lord Grantham is forced to say farewell to his beloved canine companion, Isis.

Rosamund and Violet, worried about Edith's disappearance, finally tells her mother Cora about what really happened to her, and they also tell her about Marigold. Cora is livid, and as they all wonder where Edith might be, Atticus suggests that maybe she's in the newspaper company which she inherited from Gregson.

Cora and Rosamund fetch Edith. Over lunch, Edith tells them about her plan to drop her title and move to America with the child. She would have left already, but is having second thoughts because she feels responsibility for Michael Gregson's company, and she wants Marigold to grow up English. Cora suggests telling everyone that the Drewes took on a child that they cannot care for and that they asked Edith to adopt the child. Edith agrees to the plan, only she doesn't want her father, Lord Grantham, or her sister Mary to know.

Meanwhile, Mary doesn't know what to do about Tony. She's sure that she doesn't want to marry him, but doesn't know how to break things off with him especially since they have gotten to be intimate with each other. Charles advises Mary to make a clean break with Tony, and hatches a plan to make this happen. He tells Mary to come to London wearing something appropriate for the movies. They go to the cinema and leave early.

Charles tells her to follow his commands, then he starts kissing her, just as Tony and Mabel sees them doing so. "This is a bit much, isn't it?" says Tony, looking relieved.

Tony and Mabel leave, while Charles and Mary get dinner together. Charles tells Mary that he's off to Poland for an extended stay. "By the time I get back, you'll probably be married," he tells her.

Before the big dinner at the estate, Lord Grantham enters carrying Isis—the doctor says that the dog has cancer. Though she doesn't have long to live, Robert couldn't bear to put her down.

Towards the end of the episode, we see Isis snuggled with Cora and Robert as she takes her final breath.

"Downton Abbey" airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. on PBS.
