'Downton Abbey' Season 6 News, Update: Jim Carter Speaks About the Tearful Finale Episode

The final chapter to the highly-acclaimed period drama series from ITV and PBS, "Downton Abbey," is now just around the corner and fans as well as the cast members themselves are feeling the inexplicable mix of excitement and sadness.

Excitement in a sense that as what co-creator Julian Fellowes told The Wrap that Season 6 will be the show's ultimate "resolution" and that all loose ends will be wrapped up, leaving the audience "feeling contented" and not being "cheated" towards the end.

Some of the original cast members are also appearing for the series finale. It has been reported that Matthew Goode is set to reprise his role as Henry Talbot, Mary's potential long-term match. Joining Goode, among others, is Allan Leech who will also be returning as Tom Branson.

But on the other side of the coin, the British social hierarchy drama will finally be no more and the first to be affected with its closing are the actors themselves.

Speaking with Mirror UK, and cited at Enstarz.com, Jim Carter said that he and the rest of the cast were kind of "a mess" when the series wrapped up filming for the final episode.

He first described the finale moment as somewhat "nice, low-key rather muted end to the thing."

"All the servants were together in the servants' hall," Carter told Mirror (via Enstars). "It was New Year's Eve, it was candle-lit, there were little Christmas decorations left over, it was dark and we were quietly singing Auld Lang Syne."

Behind the camera, the ambience was rather emotional.

"I felt I should say something to the crew on behalf of the cast," Carter revealed to the publication (via Enstars). "I said, 'Guys, I can't thank you enough.' Then I completely choked up."

The fans were also treated with some melodramatic farewell message via the show's latest trailer which aired last month.

The highlight reel featured scenes with some of the familiar faces in the show like Mr. Carson, Robert Crawley, Lady Edith, Anna Bates, Lady Mary, and the Dowager Countess, all while Lauren Aquilina's song cover of Andrea Bocelli's "Time to Say Goodbye" plays on the background.

"Downton Abbey" Season 6 premieres in the United States on January 2016 on the PBS channel.
