'Empire' season 2 news, cast, spoilers: Marisa Tomei's Mimi will tear the characters apart in the season 2 premiere

It's obvious that the main goal of the premiere of "Empire" season 2 is to set the tone for the episodes ahead, that is to deliver more shocking lines and happenings than ever. Fans had also seen the rise of Marisa Tomei's character — a business tycoon whose romantic interest is geared toward women. This, of course, was not missed by characters such as Lucious Lyon.

Showrunner Ilene Chaiken shared with TVLine the decision to go big this season. She is quoted saying, "We came out of Season 1 feeling like, 'There's no reason this show should stop or slow down. In fact, it's not a challenge to figure out where to take stories, it's a challenge to figure out which stories not to tell — because there are so many possibilities." Executive producer Danny Strong co-wrote the premiere and Chaiken had shared what it felt making it come to life, "We had a blast working on the script. And it felt like the actors were really happy to be reunited with those characters."

The premiere had a lot of elements going on, but the main happening revolved around the threat to Empire Entertainment. Cookie, Hakeem, Andre, and Anika have teamed up with investor Mimi Whiteman, played by Marisa Tomei, to lock down a hostile takeover of the company, using $250 million. The four tried to pull all stops, including Anika being a bait for a sexual amusement. Mimi, however, was apparently not as predictable as she ended up switching sides in the last second, going with Jamal and Lucious, who is still imprisoned, in keeping the power they have. Jamal also took it out on Hakeem afterward, deciding to shelve his record and freeze out his own mother. This had earned unwarranted slaps from his mother and the powerful accusation that he might turning into his father.
