Facebook: Are 'Non-Friends' Watching You?

Facebook is now allowing users to expand their connectivity with its new “subscribe” feature. The social media website debuted the feature earlier this week, which allows users to receive news feed updates from users with whom they are not friends.

Facebook product manager Naomi Gleit told the Huffington Post that the new subscribe feature has been implemented to give users more control over their social networking experience.

"We want to give people more control over what people see in their News Feeds," she said.

"Facebook is growing quickly and people have more and more friends, but they care about different people more or less, and different stories more or less."

Facebook’s initial aim is to allow users to be able to connect with various public figures without having to send a friend request.

However users will be able to subscribe to anyone with whom they are not friends.

The “subscribe” button can be found in the top right corner of users' Facebook pages, next to the "message" and "poke" buttons. Once subscribed to a user, updates will be available on news feeds, just as with friends.

Subscribers can set privacy settings to regulate how many updates show on their news feeds as well as what type of updates.

Users can also decide either they want to utilize the subscription option at all. By going to their Subscriptions Page and clicking "Allow Subscribers," the feature is activated.

Those who do not wish to allow subscriptions can choose to not set that option, and the subscription button will not show up on their Facebook page.
