Father and Son Make Hovercraft Rescue of Deer Stranded on Frozen Lake (VIDEO)
While frozen lakes offer humans winter fun like ice skating and fishing, they're death traps for deer. The animals will regularly walk out onto the ice and fall when they get startled. They can't find the traction to stand back up and end up dying on the iced body of water.
When James Kenison saw a Facebook post about a few deer who had been stranded for days on a frozen lake, he knew just what to do. He and his father Doug run Medcity Hovercraft in Southeast Minnesota, and they took their versatile vehicles out on a rescue mission. The Kenisons tied ropes around the deer and pulled them on the ice behind the hovercrafts to the safety of the forest, kind of like water skiing except the water is frozen, there are no skis and you're pulling a wild deer instead of one of your friends.
After their ordeal, the deer were too weak to pop right up and bound into the forest, but they eventually all returned to their native woods. A GoPro wearable camera captured the humane rescue.
