FCA to Hold 12th Annual Game Day

The Fellowship Christian Athletes Sports Ministries for the University of Illinois will host the twelfth annual FCA Game Day on Sept. 10, 2005.

The Fellowship Christian Athletes Sports Ministries for the University of Illinois will host the twelfth annual FCA Game Day on Sept. 10, 2005.

The event, which FCA sponsors every year, uses “the powerful medium of athletics to impact and influence the world in a positive way,” according to Amy Marino of FCA Sports Ministries for the University of Illinois.

"The public elevates athletes to a platform and considers them role models without really knowing much about their character," Marino said. "This event gives people the chance to really get to know the heart of the athletes they enjoy watching on the court or on the playing field."

FCA will also host a pre-game rally, "A Tribute to ILLINI Athletics," which will honor six Illini teams: Men's Basketball, Wrestling, Baseball, Men's Tennis, Men's Gymnastics and Women's Track and Field, that won ten championships last season. Both the rally and the game will be held in Huff Hall of U of I.

Former Illini basketball star Roger Powell, Jr., who remains highly involved with FCA even after his college years, will be the event's special guest speaker. He has also lent his name to other FCA event such as the Roger Powell Jr. FCA Golf Classic to take place at the Stone Creek Golf Course in Illinois on Aug. 30.

“I just love the way FCA works,” Powell once told FCA in an article posted on the website. “It’s a place athletes can go and talk about the issues of life. I believe FCA really reaches out to the youth and shows them they can get involved in positive things. It gives Christian athletes an opportunity to speak out for Jesus.”

As part of this year’s FCA Game Day, the University of Illinois will be playing against San Jose State University. The rally will begin at 11 a.m., while the kick-off will begin at 1 p.m.
