February 2016 Registered Highest Global Temperature Average In The 20th Century

Recently released scientific data by the National Centers for Environmental Information of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration showed that the month of February registered the highest global temperature average so far in the 20th century. According to the NOAA website, the average temperature recorded in February was 2.18 F higher than the average temperature for the 20th century. Notably, the December 2015 to February 2016 average temperature also posted a 2.03 F difference above the 20th century average, which covers the period 1880-2016.

The NOAA report noted that the rise of temperatures across the globe was also influenced by the El Nino phenomenon which was said to have reached its peak during the winter.

In comparison to the average temperature for the month of February from 1880-2016, February 2016 was recorded as the highest so far, with a 2.18 F difference. According to the report, the month of February also "marks the 10th consecutive month a monthly global temperature has been broken."

Another report in The Guardian cited data from NASA, which likewise showed a "stunning" leap in terms of global temperatures. According to the report, the NASA data showed that global surface temperature in February was 1.35C higher than the monthly average between the years 1951-1980. This was much higher than the 1.15C difference that was registered in January.

Climate and weather experts have likewise reacted to the news, starting with Jeff Masters and Bob Henson of Weather Underground. According to the Guardian, the pair said that the data is "yet another reminder of the incessant long-term rise in global temperature from human-produced greenhouse gases." They also expressed their fear that the world is "now hurtling at a frightening pace toward the globally agreed maximum of 2C warming over pre-industrial levels."

The 2C limit was set at the UN climate summer in December, with countries committing to work on limiting the warming cap to 1.5C, by implementing country-level efforts to curb carbon emissions which is said to be biggest contributor to global warming, according to the report.
