'Feud' Season 1 Episode 5: Joan Prepares to Outshine Bette at the Oscars

The upcoming episode of "Feud" season 1 will see Joan (Jessica Lange) and Hedda (Judy Davis) secretly scheming against Bette (Susan Sarandon).

The synopsis for the next episode, titled "And the Winner is... (The Oscars of 1963)," states that Joan and Hedda will start a covert campaign against Bette, who is up for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her work in "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" If she wins, it will be her third Best Actress Oscar, breaking a record.

Joan is understandably jealous of Bette. After all, Bette got nominated for an Oscar and she did not, even though they both delivered spectacular performances in "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" It is clear that the feud between the two legendary actresses will soon boil over.

A teaser trailer for the new episode has also been released. It opens with Bette in a press conference as a reporter asks her about her thoughts on Joan getting snubbed by the Academy for an Oscar. She replies in true Bette fashion.

Elsewhere, Joan and Hedda talk about their disdain for Bette. They lay out their plan against her, which involves Joan accepting a Best Actress Oscar in someone else's stead should Bette lose. In that way, Joan would still have her moment in the spotlight.

Meanwhile, here is a brief recap of the previous episode, titled "More, or Less."

Bette and Joan initially thought their movie was going to be a huge failure, which was devastating to them since "Baby Jane" was sort of a Hail Mary for their careers. However, when the screenings started, they were all--including Bob (Alfred Molina)--surprised by the positive reception.

In the end, the Oscar nominations were announced. Joan found out that Bette had gotten a nod, but she did not, which she took rather badly.

"Feud" season 1 airs Sundays at 10 p.m. EDT on FX.
