'Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition' Reviews, News: Version to Let Mobile Gamers Experience Hit PS4 Title

"Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition" may seem to be a strange idea at first, but it's one that players of the main title on the console and PC will quickly warm up to. The mobile game comes out to Android and iOS later this year.

Square Enix is ready to give fans of the main game free content to get used to the idea, too. Although the release will be episodic in format, all ten planned episodes will be up and available at launch, and they are also giving the first episode for free, according to the game's official site.

The mobile version of the game manages to pull it off by remaining faithful to the main game, as Polygon reviewed. While the whole world and the main cast have been resized, simplified, and reworked into cute, "chibi" style models, the mobile remake still follows the story of the console and PC version beat by beat.

It helps that "Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition" uses the same voiced lines and music as the main title. Another change Square Enix made for mobile is the format, which breaks the story up into ten episodes. This series still covers the entire storyline of the main game, however.

The mobile version of the game also keeps a lot of the gameplay mechanics of the larger "Final Fantasy XV" as well, albeit with a few changes to accommodate touchscreen controls. The skill trees are still there, and the overall scheme works surprisingly well, as Engadget notes.
