Find My iPhone Assist Feature on iOS 8

As if the iPhone 6 unveiling wasn't enough, Apple paired the release of their flagship smartphone with the latest in their Apple mobile operating system, the iOS 8. The operating system was made available to all compatible devices Sept. 17, two days before the retail release of the iPhone 6.

For the record, the iOS 8 update is only available for the following devices: iPhone 4S and above, the iPod Touch 5th Generation, iPad 2 above, the iPad Air, and all iPad Mini variants. Older Apple devices will have to stick to the iOS 7 or an older iOS.

Since the iOS 8 is a big update, a lot of things have been improved upon or were introduced. Some of these features and updates are major ones like the added functionability of the TouchID fingerprint scanner. While finding the best iOS features is variable and depends on the user, no doubt that there are features that useful for everyone.

Find My iPhone assist is a great feature in the case that your Apple device gets lost (or stolen). The feature is iCloud-powered but the great thing about it is that it doesn't actively transmit the device's location all the time. The device equipped with the iOS 8 only transmits its location when the user looking for it requests it.

The downside to this feature is that it doesn't work when the device has run out of battery charge or is turned off. If such a case happens, the device transmits its last known location before turning off. iCloud stores that information for 24-hours only though so users have until then to look for the device. Once the 24-hour window closes, owners of the device will have to wait until the device is turned on again.

While Apple has expanded the functionality of the TouchID fingerprint sensor, there aren't many uses for it yet as not many payment methods have adapted to the concept of using the iPhone as a vector.
