However, the Islanders did not show any signs of intimidation despite playing away from home as they took a 1-0 series lead thanks to excellent composure and determination from the squad.

New York saw the Panthers take the lead three times in the night and it began early as Teddy Purcell beat out Thomas Greiss in the 1:55 mark of the first period to give Florida the early advantage.

The Islanders bounced back ferociously at the sixth minute of the game as Brock Nelson connected with Ryan Strome to beat Roberto Luongo and tie the score at 1-1.

Less than 10 minutes later, Jussi Jokinen took advantage of a power play as he scored from assists by Brian Campbell and Reilly Smith to restore Florida's lead and take the momentum back.

Unfortunately for them, New York also took their man advantage near the end of the period to score a goal after Frans Nielsen tied the game at 2-2.

The same pattern followed in the second period as Smith scored early to give Florida the lead again.

It took a while but New York finally levelled the score again with less than 30 seconds left in the period with a John Tavares goal.

With that goal, New York took the momentum on the night and grabbed their first lead in the 2:33 mark of the third period as Kyle Okposo scored to give the Islanders a 4-3 lead.

Ryan Strome would then make it 5-3 for New York with a goal less than four minutes later.

Smith scored his second of the night for Florida but it was the final goal they had as New York prevented another comeback to eventually come away with a 5-4 win and a 1-0 lead in the series.
