Floyd Mayweather, Jr. News: World Boxing Organization Strips Fighter of 'Fight of the Century' Welterweight Title

Recent news in the world of boxing, the World Boxing Organization has stripped off the welterweight world title that Floyd Mayweather Jr. won during his fight with the Filipino fighter, Manny "Pac-Man" Pacquiao in May 2's "Fight of the Century."

According to a report from Reuters, the reason behind WBO's decision stem from Mayweather's failure to pay on Friday afternoon the $200,000 sanctioning fee from the fight.

The 48-0 record-holder boxer also failed to vacate the junior middleweight title he held prior to the May 2 fight.

It is against the sanctioning organization rules for boxers to hold world titles in multiple weight classes and that the undefeated boxer should have indicated which weight division he wished to retain.

IThe WBO has given the 38-year-old athlete leeway in the said event. Dan Rafael of ESPN revealed that Mayweather was given two months, instead of the typical 10 days' time, to decide which weight class he wants to continue to hold the title in.

"The WBO World Championship Committee is allowed no other alternative but to cease to recognize Mr. Floyd Mayweather, Jr. as the WBO Welterweight Champion of the World and vacate his title, for failing to comply with our WBO Regulations of World Championship Contests," the WBO said in a statement.

Mayweather, who outscored Pacquaio in the 147-pound titled fight, earned over $200 million from the fight.

The huge event, which saw the partnership of Showtime and HBO, has reported to have broken all financial records in the history of sport.

The five-division fighter meanwhile has been given two weeks to launch an appeal on the issue.
