Frankfurt Motor Show 2017 Updates: Audi Reveals 2018 R8 V10 RWS, its First Ever Rear-Wheel Drive Supercar

Audi has announced at the still ongoing Frankfurt Motor Show that it is releasing a new limited edition mid-engined supercar with rear-wheel drive for the first time: The 2018 R8 V10 RWS.

Audi's R8 V10 RWS was inspired by its R8 V10 LMS and will be available in both Coupe and Spyder body styles. However, the upcoming car will be highly limited as there will only be 999 units to be released worldwide.

The R8 V10 RWS, which stands for Rear Wheel Series, was hand-built at Audi's Böllinger Höfe factory. It is aimed at purists whose priority in purchasing a car is for driving enjoyment. After all, with the R8 V10 RWS coming with a specially tuned chassis primarily meant for controlled drifts, it is sure to deliver driving pleasures, indeed.

The Coupe form of the R8 V10 RWS weighs 1,590kg, or 50kg lighter than the conventional all-wheel drive cars. This is due to the supercar's lack of all-wheel drive components, including the prop shaft, multi-plate clutch, and centre differential.

Apart from being relatively lighter, the R8 V10 RWS is also even more rear-biased, with about 40.6 to 59.4 front to rear ratio, thanks to its weight balance, which, on the other hand, has also been affected by the absence of the all-wheel drive components.

The R8 V10 RWS sits on black-finished 190-inch alloys in a five-spoke design with 245/35 fronts and 295/35 rear tires and comes with a new matte painted grille and gloss black side blade.

Would-be owners of the car may also opt for a unit that comes with a red stripe running along the bonnet, roof, and rear of the supercar.

It also boasts of Alcantara leather seats and a dash plaque to prove that the owner is one of the lucky few to own one of the 999 units that Audi has manufactured.

As the company has labeled it a series, it is suspected that Audi will be releasing more rear-wheel drive variant in the future.

The Audi R8 V10 RWS starts at a price of $145,000 although its exact release date is yet to be announced.
