Friday the 13th Trivia and Superstitions Explained: Rare Full 'Honey Moon' Today

Friday the 13th strikes fear in the hearts of the superstitious, but the day is meaningful only to those who believe in bad luck.

The unusual day arrives any time that a month begins on a Sunday, and while there is no proof of Friday the 13th brings bad lunch, the day remains the most prevalent superstition in the Western world. Coupled with the rarity of a Friday the 13th, there is also a rare full moon known as the "honey moon" on Friday.

A "honey moon" is known for its golden yellow glow, and June 13's full moon will be especially yellow throughout the entire night. It is believed that the term honey moon referring to a trip newlyweds take may be attributed to the June "honey moon" since many weddings take place during the month of June. However, the full moon Friday is also known as the Strawberry Moon since it takes place at the height of strawberry season, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

Meanwhile, the lore behind Friday the 13th is often traced back to Scripture; in Christianity, Good Friday was a day filled with guilt, pain, and the death of Jesus. Those who fear the gloomy day are sometimes diagnosed with triskaidaphobia: an irrational fear of Friday the 13th. Many notable historical figures suffered from the phobia, including Winston Churchill, J. Paul Getty, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt who each experienced the irrational fear of 13. Additionally, Napoleon regarded Friday the 13th with fear, and evidence suggests that Christopher Columbus also suffered from triskaidekaphobia.

As a result of Friday the 13th, businesses commonly report a decrease in sales on the day, according to the National Geographic. Moreover, the taboo is so prevalent that many buildings do not have a 13th floor, and airlines often do not include a 13th row.

Despite the widespread fear evoked by Friday the 13th, many people believe quite the opposite- that the special day brings good luck. Twitter users have flooded the social media site with their differing beliefs, and "Friday the 13th" became a trending topic today.

There are many fun ways to celebrate Friday the 13th, including watching a scary movie. A brand new horror film "Deliver Us From Evil" is headed to theaters this month, but there are a slew of old classics available honoring the mystery of Friday the 13th.
