'Frozen' Fans Petition for Elsa to Have a Girlfriend in 'Frozen 2' Movie

Fans of the 2013 animated blockbuster hit "Frozen" have taken to social media to ask Disney to give Queen Elsa (voiced by Idina Menzel) a female love interest in the highly anticipated sequel "Frozen 2."

While talk about featuring an LGBT relationship in "Frozen 2" isn't anything new, the issue was re-fuelled on Saturday, when the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend began picking up internet steam. The hashtag evolved out of 17-year-old Alexis Isabel Moncada's musings about giving Elsa, one of the most prominent Disney characters of all time, an LGBT-inclusive plot line in the upcoming sequel.

"I hope Disney makes Elsa a lesbian princess imagine how iconic that would be," Moncada tweeted on Saturday morning. Later, she added, "Dear @Disney, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend."

Since then, the teenager's hashtag has been shared thousands of times. On Monday, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend began trending on Twitter as many voiced their support for an LGBT character in the sequel to one of Disney's top-grossing movies.

"#GiveElsaAGirlfriend because LGBT kids deserve to know that there is nothing wrong with them," Vine personality Jeffrey Marsh, who identifies as genderqueer, tweeted on Sunday.

The Twitter campaign was also referenced on this Saturday's episode of "Saturday Night Live."

"There are more than just one kind of person," Moncada said in an interview with NBC 12. "To see the same story over and over about a girl and her prince charming, it's repetitive, and it leaves so many people out and makes so many people feel alone."

According to Moncado, who identifies as bisexual, this is how she felt as a child.

"Frozen," which became a cultural phenomenon soon after its release, bucked the traditional Disney princess movie trend by not giving Elsa, one of the film's two main characters, a romantic relationship. At the time, some fans theorized that "Let It Go," the film's Oscar-winning song, could be a coming-out anthem, and that Elsa could be a lesbian.

While Disney has yet to announce a release date for "Frozen 2," it seems that the film's main plot has already been determined. In an interview with Collider in March, "Frozen" star Kristen Bell, who voices Princess Anna, said, "They've just written it and they're still doing tweaks, but I think we should be recording this month."
