Galaxy Nexus Release Date: Will Sprint Get the Smartphone?

November 8, 2011|5:18 pm

Industry insiders continue to speculate whether the Sprint network will carry the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

A recent inventory leak revealed Sprint might carry the smartphone after its release on the Verizon Wireless network.

An inventory form surfaced detailing that Sprint ordered advertising posters for the "Nexus Prime;" the most common internal alias for the Galaxy Nexus.

Insiders proposed the Samsung Galaxy Nexus would release on other networks after its Verizon Wireless launch.

The Galaxy Nexus is expected to power both 4G LTE and HSPA+ networks. These led insiders to believe networks such as AT&T and T-Mobile, that power both 4G LTE and HSPA+, could eventually have an option for the Galaxy Nexus.

Recent reports also detail the U.S. Cellular network is preparing for the Galaxy Nexus and other 4G LTE devices.

Many considered Sprint would not get the Galaxy Nexus due to its WiMAX 4G network being vastly different from the LTE and HSPA+ networks for which the smartphone will be compatible.

However, insiders have compared the Galaxy Nexus to the Google Nexus S that was not expected to be on the Sprint network when it was released in December 2010.

The smartphone, originally powered by AT&T and T-Mobile, was eventually introduced to the Sprint network in May 2011.

They also noted the Samsung Galaxy S2 has a Sprint network variant that goes by the name Epic 4G Touch. It was the first U.S. version to release in September. AT&T and T-Mobile versions released in October despite the varying 4G networks.

The Galaxy Nexus is expected to release in late November.
