November 15, 2011|10:44 am

The Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket will receive an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich sometime in 2012, announced AT&T during the Nov. 6 launch of the smartphone variant on its network.

Along with being one of the first 4G LTE smartphones powered by AT&T, the Galaxy S2 Skyrocket is the first Galaxy S2 model that has been confirmed for a United States update to Ice Cream Sandwich

Since the Oct. 19 unveiling of Ice Cream Sandwich, consumers have anticipated which smartphones will receive Ice Cream Sandwich updates.

Reports indicated Samsung confirmed the Galaxy S2 and the Google Nexus S smartphones for Ice Cream Sandwich updates but the manufacturer has not made an official statement about its re-release plans for the U.S.

AT&T is the only carrier that has made a statement about its plans to update to the latest operating system.

Recently, Samsung Italy reported the Samsung Galaxy S2 would receive an Ice Cream Sandwich update by the second quarter of 2012, as well as the Galaxy Note smartphone and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 8.9 tablets.

However, release dates are known to vary according to the country. The Galaxy S2 was not introduced to the U.S. until September and October for AT&T, when it had been released internationally in April.

Most smartphones scheduled for Ice Cream Sandwich updates are expected to re-release in 2012.

The release date of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the first smartphone to power Ice Cream Sandwich also remains unconfirmed. However, industry insiders speculate a Nov. 21 release.
