Galaxy S2 Verizon Release Date: Samsung Smartphone to Get Android Ice Cream Sandwich

The Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone will get the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update, according to reports.

The announcement was tweeted from the company's U.K. offices, confirming the rumors surrounding the update for the phones.

The new operating system allows users to use "intuitive gestures" to navigate between functions on the phones.

The mobile operating system also makes it easier to switch between apps, features a customizable favorites tray and uses drag-and-drop technology to make completing tasks easier.

Google announced that a music app also is coming soon for the mobile operating system. Google unveiled its new iTunes-like music store Wednesday.

The service will be available to Android 4.0 users.

The music service features streaming capabilities and cloud capabilities. users also can upload 20,000 songs to stream on other devices.

Millions of songs are also available for users to purchase. Individual songs are priced similarly to those available on iTunes. Songs are available for 99 cents to $1.29 each.

Other features of the updated operating system include improved speech-to-text software, enhanced data-sharing options and a scanning feature that uses facial recognition to unlock the phone.

Users also can more easily share information – including videos, websites and contact information – by waving two phones near each other.

It is unclear what other phones will offer the updated operating system. Sony and Lenovo have announced plans to include the updated operating system on phones. HTC, Motorola and LG have all announced plans to include the update on select models.

Verizon Wireless announced it would carry the smartphones in the U.S. but has not given a release date for the highly anticipated product.

It also is unclear when the update will be available for Samsung Galaxy S II users.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus was released in the U.K. Thursday with the updated operating system.
