Galaxy test drive news 2015: Samsung runs out of phones to loan out to iPhone users

Samsung ran out of Galaxy smartphones to loan out to iPhone users in the company's "Ultimate Test Drive" promo.

Last weekend, Samsung launched a test drive promo to convince iPhone users to switch to Galaxy phones. For just $1, iPhone customers in the United States were given the chance to test drive a Galaxy Note 5, a Galaxy S6 Edge+, or a Galaxy S6 Edge for one month, according to Times of India (TOI).

However, it seems that Samsung did not prepare enough Galaxy phones to be loaned out to loyal customers of its rival Apple Inc. Either that, or the South Korean tech giant underestimated the number of iPhone users who wanted to make the brand switch.

Samsung has put the Galaxy test drive promo on hold after a couple of days because it ran our of spare handsets. On Friday, a Samsung representative told Re/code that the response to the Galaxy test drive far "exceeded their expectations." The smartphone maker is now working on resuming the promo as soon as possible, Fierce Wireless reports.

"Due to the overwhelming demand, we are temporarily out of test drive phones," TOI quotes Samsung's statement on the Ultimate Test Drive site. "Please keep checking back for available phones."

Under the terms of the test drive promo, interested iPhone users will be given a month-long data plan with AT&T, Spring, T-Mobile, or Verizon. They will register for the test drive from their Apple handset and go through a 30-day trial period. At the end of the month, they can simply return the Galaxy handset if they are not satisfied with it. Customers who decide to switch to Samsung will be charged the full price of their choice of Galaxy smartphone, the report details.

Meanwhile, Apple is set to unveil its next iPhone in September. Samsung is putting in extra effort to gain traction over its biggest rival after its popularity dwindled.
