'Game of Thrones' Enhanced Edition Preview and Updates 2016: Apple and George R.R. Martin Announce New Interactive 'GoT' Books

Winter is coming - to your fingertips. "Game of Thrones" (GoT) author George R. R. Martin and Apple announced new digital editions of "A Song of Ice and Fire" series to mark the 20th anniversary of the epic fantasy novels. It's titled "A Game of Thrones: Enhanced Edition," and has since been released exclusively for Apple's iBooks.

According to Martin, the new digital books signified "a new period" in book publishing. The enhanced editions all come with rich secondary material, including in-universe maps and annotations, that aid readers.

And the new digital edition of the GoT saga is rightfully named so. The "Game of Thrones: Enhanced Edition" present a more immersive experience of the series with its additional content, from interactive maps to character annotations. Now readers will never have to confuse the Lannisters for Targaryens!

All of the e-books contain character maps, annotations, house summaries, and even a glossary, to help readers expand the "Game of Thrones" universe as they go along the series. Among its many impressive features include an in-depth, interactive character map, which detail his or her location, journeys, timelines, and genealogies. Whenever new characters are introduced into the text, an annotation will pop up to provide readers a short bio and introduction.

Other remarkable features

Meanwhile, additional annotations are marked by a small crown icon provide readers with more trivia about the "Game of Thrones" universe. There's even audio clips that narrate the books' most memorable passages (or White Walker attacks), voiced by Roy Dotrice!

For aspiring "Game of Thrones" know-it-alls, George R.R. Martin has taken the liberty and effort to put together an appendix on the great houses of Westeros - all 92 of them - and its characters. This include explanations of the houses' symbolism, regions, and alliances.

'The Winds of Winter'

As for readers who have grown weary of waiting for the sixth book, "The Winds of Winter," here's some good news: the new "Game of Thrones: Enhanced Edition" includes a preview of the yet-unfinished novel! HarperCollins said the excerpt was previously available on Martin's blog, but is now exclusively available on the iBooks.

Now there's something to do while waiting for the premiere of "Game of Thrones" Season 7! "A Game of Thrones: Enhanced Edition" is available for $9, while "A Clash of Kings," "A Storm of Swords," "A Feast for Crows," and "A Dance With Dragons" up for preorder at $12.
