Sunday night's episode of "Game of Thrones" set off a deluge of reactions on Twitter following the final Red Wedding scene.
During the episode entitled "The Rains of Castamere," King in the North Robb Stark, played by Richard Madden, apologizes to Lord Walder Frey and his daughter for breaking an oath to marry one of the girls.
In order to right his wrong and unite House Frey with House Tully, Robb presents his foolish uncle Edmure to marry one of Frey's daughters instead.
After the falsely festive wedding between Edmure and Walder's surprisingly lovely daughter Roslin, doors are abruptly slammed on the celebration and tremendous violence broke out in what is now famous as the Red Wedding.
Harsh and debauched Lord Walder's troops first descended on Robb's pregnant wife Talisa (played by Oona Chaplin), stabbing her repeatedly in the stomach and leaving her bleeding on the ground.
Next, Robb is struck with crossbows before his mother Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley) desperately tried to save his life by threatening that of Frey's wife.
"I'll find another," Frey replied to the threat, eliciting a blood-coiling moan of grief from Catelyn just before Robb is killed.
Shortly thereafter, Catelyn cut the throat of Walder's wife just before her own life was taken during the gory scene.
Subsequently, fans of the show including dozens of celebrities tweeted shocked and saddened responses to the violent closing moments.
Furthermore, "Game of Thrones" continued to trend on the micro blogging site through Tuesday.
Among the most surprised viewers included Elizabeth Banks, a star in "Hunger Games," who wrote: "Holy Mother…. I have nothing quippy or cool to say re: Game of Thrones. I'm shattered. #GoT"
"Pretty Little Liars" star Troian Bellisario added that the episode took a huge toll on her mood.
"My outlook on life is bleak," wrote the actress. "But I've never been this low. Thanks #GOT for making me love things and then slaughtering them before my eyes."
Also among the notable tweets was that of "GOT" star Lena Headey, who portrays Queen Cersei Lannister on the series.
"I cried," the actress posted to Twitter of the gut-wrenching Red Wedding scene. "Michelle Fairley is one of my favorite actors to watch. She is so present. That howl for her son ripped through my heart."
Season three of "GOT" wraps up on Sunday on HBO at 9 p.m. EST.
