'Game of Thrones' Spinoff Plot News: Is Fifth Prequel About House Targaryen?

A fifth "Game of Thrones" spinoff is officially in development. Bryan Cogman, a seasoned writer on the popular HBO show, is in charge of this prequel and author George R.R. Martin hints it could be about House Targaryen.

Martin confirmed on his Livejournal that there's a fifth potential show to takeover "Game of Thrones" once it ends. He also confirmed that, unlike the other spinoffs where he's only advising the writers, he will be co-creating this fifth option with Cogman.

"[It's] set during a very exciting period of Westerosi history," Martin said, adding that it will be an actual adaptation of one of his books.

Speculations are that Martin and Cogman are working on adapting "Fire and Blood, Volume 1" for the small screen, which tackles the history of the Targaryen dynasty. The famed author intends to publish the book around late 2018 or 2019, which coincides with the end of "Game of Thrones" on HBO.

Cogman's work on "Game of Thrones" over the years has resulted in a positive collaboration with Martin. Fans are optimistic that their work on the potential prequel could capture the same heart and theme that kept viewers addicted to the mother series for nearly a decade.

Meanwhile, HBO clarified that not all the spinoffs in development will progress as a TV show to replace "Game of Thrones." The network will likely confirm only one of the five shows, but who are behind these and what are they working on?

In May, HBO tapped writers Max Borenstein, Jane Goldman, Brian Helgeland and Carly Wray to create separate prequel ideas. Like Cogman, Goldman and Wray will be working closely with Martin for their stories.

The writers won't reveal the exact content they are working on but Goldman told Digital Spy that her story will have horror and humor. She also hinted that her spinoff is something familiar to fans of the show's lore.
