Gene Hackman OK After Hit by Truck in Florida Keys

Gene Hackman's publicist stated that the veteran Oscar-winning actor was briefly hospitalized after a truck ran into him from behind while he was riding a bicycle in the Florida Keys.

Susan Madore says the 81-year-old Hackman was airlifted to a Miami hospital Friday afternoon.

She reported Hackman’s injuries as minor bumps and bruises. She stated he was released from the hospital several hours later after the results of routine tests did not highlight any major cause for concern.

A report by the Florida Highway Patrol stated that Hackman was riding on an Islamorada street around 3:00 p.m. when the pickup truck hit the back of his bicycle which caused Hackman to be thrown onto the grassy shoulder. No charges were immediately reported.

During a career that has spanned five decades, Hackman has won two Academy Awards and been nominated for three others.

He took the Best Actor trophy for his portrayal of Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle in "The French Connection" in 1971, and the Best Supporting Actor award for "Unforgiven" in 1992.

He also was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his breakthrough role as Buck Barrow, Clyde Barrow's brother, in "Bonnie & Clyde" in 1967 as well as "I Never Sang for My Father" in 1970 and "Mississippi Burning" in 1988. Besides the Oscars, Hackman has won three Golden Globes and two BAFTA’s.

Hackman is also widely known for playing Superman's archenemy Lex Luthor in three films.

Hackman, who turns 82 this month, officially retired from acting in 2004. Hackman last appeared in a major motion picture in 2004, co-starring with Ray Romano in the political comedy "Welcome to Mooseport."

There have also been talks of a return to acting for Hackman yet those reports have only been rumored.
