Gerard Pique's Shakira Relationship a Distraction? Soccer Star Could Be Dropped

New reports are suggesting that young soccer star Gerard Pique might be dropped from FC Barcelona over his relationship with pop superstar Shakira.

According to a rumors emanating from Spain and reported on by Fox Sports, FC Barcelona head coach Pep Guardiola is only willing to re-sign with the team if it gets rid of its budding star, Gerard Pique.

The reports are suggesting that Guardiola believes that the young talent's girlfriend Shakira is serving as too much of a distraction to the game.

Guardiola is denying the claims in the Spanish papers, arguing instead that his wife does not want him to continue spending so much time away from home as a coach for the star team.

Pique, 25, is a rising talent in the Spanish soccer scene and also plays for Spain's national team.

Shakira is found of her boyfriend's sport, saying in a recent interview that through her experience preforming the theme song for the 2010 World Cup, "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)."

The singer told FIFA.com that experience in South Africa enabled her to see the "dedication, commitment, discipline, and teamwork" that is required to play on an all-star team.

"Once you start to understand football you realize that it's not just about the physical side of the game and chasing after a ball," the singer recently told the website, adding that the experience of singing at the World Cup showed her "the importance and impact this sport has on the lives of billions of people every day, on the dreams of the young people and children who devote so many hours of their lives to play the game."

With her newfound love for the sport, Shakira says that she will likely be present at the 2014 World Cup games.

"I'm not sure in what capacity, but I'll definitely be there," she said.
