'Ghostbusters 3' Release Date News: Dan Aykroyd Talks Female-Led Reboot, Hints at Future Sequel With Original Cast

After a lot of rumors and speculation, it has already been confirmed that the hit 1984 supernatural-comedy film franchise "Ghostbusters" will once again be brought to the big screen, but this time by a quartet of female stars.

To be spearheaded by Paul Feig, the "Bridesmaid" director stated through his social media that he is already working on a reboot script that will see actors Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon taking on the respective lead roles of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, and the late Harold Ramis.

Despite the mixed reactions of the public towards the premise of the purported film, Aykroyd appeared at the SiriusXM studios for an episode on "Unmasked with Ron Bennington" to clarify things up.

During the talk, the 62-year-old shared that he is more than excited for the all-female reboot of the film.

"The real reality in fact of the third movie with this tremendous cast of women, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Kristen Wiig. ... I've got three daughters, so I'm all for female empowerment," Aykroyd said. "[Feig] establishes the voices beautifully in these characters. Now of course, he's got masters playing the roles for him, so this is going to really work in our favor for the third movie."

"I can tell you, as the originator, I'm very happy with what [Feig's] done. It's very tasteful. And it needed a reworking. The thing needed a new engine. You know? It needed new exhaust. It needed new steering. And this is what we're getting," he went on to say.

However, the franchise co-creator revealed the possibility of a follow-up to the "Ghostbusters 2" which would likely feature the original cast members.

"Well, there's three drafts of the old concept that exists. And we're going to be able to salvage some of it and use it. Yeah, we're gonna be able to use it someday. Let's get this one made and that will reinvigorate the franchise and then we'll go on to maybe doing a more conventional third sequel as we were planning and another idea I have for it," Aykroyd said.

For the meantime, the Feig-helmed "Ghostbusters" is slated to open in theaters this July 22, 2016.
