Giving Thanks

Thanksgiving is a wonderful opportunity to count the many blessings we have been given.

The Word of God tells us that all we have is a gift from God, and that we are to show our gratitude to Him. In fact, Thanksgiving is an important element throughout the entire Bible. Here are a few of the verses that offer reflections and expressions of gratitude:

"You must be rooted in Christ . . . and full of thanksgiving" Colossians 2:7

"In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

"God richly gives us everything to enjoy." I Timothy 6:17 NCV

"My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to Him." Psalm 28:7 NIV

'Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is so good...' Psalm 118:29 TLB

"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above..." James 1:17 KJV

"We have all benefited from the rich blessing He brought to us blessing upon blessing heaped upon us." John 1:16 TLB

"I thank my God upon every remembrance of you." Philippians 1:3 KIV

".. for He satisfied the thirsty and fills the hungry with good thinking." Psalm 107:9 NIV

"Blessed by the Lord, Who daily loads us with benefits..." Psalm 68:19 NKJV

"I brought you into a bountiful country, to eat its fruit and its goodness." Jeremiah 2:7 NKJV

"...You shall rejoice in all the good things the Lord your God has given to you and your household." Deuteronomy 26:11 NIV

“Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe.” Hebrews 12:28 ESV

“It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High” Psalm 92:1 ESV

“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17 ESV

“And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:15 ESV

“The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me; to one who orders his way rightly I will show the salvation of God!” Psalm 50:23 ESV

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” James 1:17 ESV

“Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.” Hebrews 13:15 ESV

In addition to showing our thanks to God, gratitude also has health and mental benefits. People who practice gratitude regularly report higher levels of alertness, enthusiasm, determination, optimism and energy. Additionally, they experience less depression and stress, exercise more regularly and make more progress toward personal goals. In addition, people who feel grateful are also more likely to feel loved and are more likely to help others.

So give thanks for all that you have been blessed with – on Thanksgiving, and every day.
