Within three years of its launch, 200 million Android devices have been activated, Google revealed during a music event Wednesday, accounting for 550,000 activations every single day.

Six months prior to this week’s announcement, the number of Android devices being activated hit the 100 million mark – now amazingly doubled in less than a year’s time.

The company’s latest benchmark figures are astounding many considering the software platform’s entry into the market just a few years ago.

“Android benefited from more mass-market offerings, a weaker competitive environment, and the lack of exciting new products on alternating operative systems such as Windows Phone 7 and RIM,” Information Week quoted Roberta Cozza, a research analyst at Gartner.

According to the latest numbers from Gartner, sales for worldwide smartphones rose 42 percent to 115 million units in the third quarter – 60 million of those units running the Android platform.

Android grew from 25.3 percent to 52.5 percent share from the third quarter last year, making it the current leading smartphone platform in the world.

The latest activation figures for the Android are nearly double that of the iOS, which reports about 210,000 daily activations.

“Of course, it’s not fair to compare Android activations to iOS activations, because while there’s only one iOS phone, there’s countless Android devices,” Jane McEntegart described on Engadget.

“However, despite Android’s advantage of multiple devices, Apple has activated 250 million iPhones and so, is still ahead. Still, it’s not by much, and with the rate Android is going, it won’t take Google long to catch up.”

If the platform continues to grow at the current pace, one million daily Android activations may be reached during 2012, VR-Zone revealed.

Information Week believed that Android would “remain on top for the foreseeable future.”
