Google Pixel 2 vs iPhone 8 Specs, Price Comparison: Which Latest-Generation Phone Is Better?

Google has just announced the next generation Pixel 2, and so far, it looks like a step up from the last year's Pixel model in every way. How does the regular Pixel 2 stack up to the other high profile release this year, the Apple iPhone 8?

On paper, the new Pixel 2 is in the same tier as other flagship phones out in the market today, and then some. It has the latest chipset, an upgraded display, and an even better camera, as The Verge noted.

A fair comparison with the iPhone 8 is better served after the Pixel 2 ships out later in October, with real-life user experience taken into account. For now, a spec point-by-point comparison will have to do.

The Pixel 2 has a bigger display and a higher resolution, with its 5-inch screen and full HD resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. The iPhone 8, meanwhile, gets by with just 1,334 by 750 pixels. While the Pixel 2 has moved on to an OLED display, the iPhone 8 has not followed the iPhone X to have that technology and instead has stuck to plain LED.

The new release from Google has the latest Snapdragon 835 chip backed by 4 GB of memory, with options for 64 GB or 128 GB of storage. The iPhone 8 has the A11 Bionic, a huge jump over Apple's previous chip, but then the company opted to pack just 2 GB of memory with it.

The new iPhone has options for 64 GB or 256 GB of storage, as well, giving it more room to grow than the Pixel 2, as listed off by CNet.

The camera, however, is what will sell the Pixel 2. It has new dial-pixel sensors for the main 12.2-megapixel camera, and also has optical image stabilization in addition to the usual electronic stabilizer. Google also claims to have individually calibrated each phone to match its lens perfectly as well, according to The Verge.

The iPhone 8 had a short run as the top handset camera according to DxOMark, who called it "the best smartphone camera we've ever tested," via Tech Crunch. They had to take it back, however, as the Pixel 2 trounced the iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.

The Pixel 2 starts at just $649 dollars, too, compared to the $699 for the iPhone 8.
