Google's Android 6.0 Marshmallow to Start Rolling Out October 5

Google is set to unload its latest mobile OS, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow, starting October 5, almost a week after today's launch event.

Google just finished launching its two new Nexus flagships, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P during its special event today, September 29, Tuesday, and both smartphones are already carrying its new mobile operating system, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow, before it officially rolls out to the public next week, October 5.

Based on information released by Canadian telecom carrier, Telus on its Software Update Schedule page, the latest Android iteration will also find its way to the Motorola Google Nexus 6 and the LG Google Nexus 5 on the same date.

However, the schedule was immediately updated to remove the Marshmallow news update, showing the telecom's own target launch dates for the HTC One M9, Sony Xperia Z1, and BlackBerry Z30, instead.

Initially unveiled during the Google I/O 2015 in late May and released for developer preview, Android 6.0 Marshmallow will incorporate updates to improve overall experience for the end user, including a new design for its permission model where apps are no longer granted automatic permission to install, but instead will integrate an opt-in system for users to allow or deny individual app permissions, particularly when an application is used for the first time.

There will also be a new Doze power management scheme to extend battery life while a device is not in use. Doze reduces the level of background app activity when the motion sensors on a device determine it is not in active use.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow will also provide fingerprint recognition support for third-party apps, to unlock a device, and to authenticate purchases made via Google Play Store and Android Play.

While there have been no official announcements from smartphone manufacturers and other carriers, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow is expected to start rolling out its updates for a number of handset brands before the year ends.
