GoPro Hero 5 Release Date: 'Connected and Convenient' Hero 5 Confirmed to Debut Later This Year

GoPro recently held its financial earnings call, during which the company revealed more details about its much-anticipated Hero 5.

CEO Nick Woodman said the GoPro Hero 5 will be "the most connected and convenient GoPro we have ever made." He didn't go into details here, though.

However, multiple sites have offered their own interpretations of what "connected and convenient" might mean. Most industry followers agree that including cloud-based capability or support will be a key feature of the Hero 5. Engadget believes integration to mobile and desktop, as well as simpler controls, could also be included.

It remains to be seen if the above suggestions will be integrated into the new GoPro action camera. What's certain, however, is that GoPro will launch a new desktop software to work with its cameras. The software aims to provide users with an easier way to edit their videos, a problem that the GoPro has been trying to address for some time now.

"GoPro as we have known it today has resonated with our core customer, who wants the solution so badly that they are willing to deal with the inconvenience of manually offloading and accessing and editing their content," Woodman said. "But we are self-aware and we're willing to acknowledge that experience is too difficult for the mass market consumer, today."

The new software is expected to not only help users make video edits more high quality but also for the process to take only minutes to do. Woodman specifically said the software will help users "easily sort large amounts of footage" and "trim and share directly" to social media. The new GoPro desktop software rolls out in March.

In addition to the software, GoPro is also prepping to launch the GoPro Karma drone and the GoOmni virtual reality camera rig this summer. Woodman said the GoPro drone will be "extremely differentiated" from those that already exist in the market. This is in line with GoPro's aim to be "the world's leading activity capturing company." Woodman has hinted the new products will change the way the market perceives GoPro.

The GoPro Hero 5 is slated to release "later this year."
