'Grey's Anatomy' Season 12 Spoilers: Attack On Meredith Is 'Bad In A Whole Different Way,' 'Grey's' Actress Reveals

Fan speculation about Meredith's (Ellen Pompeo) fate has ran rampant ever since ABC released its new "TGIT" promo, in which a bloodied Meredith appears to have been shot or otherwise violently attacked.

When the long-running medical drama series returns with its midseason premiere, "Meredith gets attacked and it's as gruesome and terrifying as it looks," Kelly McCreary, who plays Mer's half-sister Maggie on the show, told E! News at ABC's Winter Press Tour party on Saturday night.

"As bad as things have gotten for Meredith, this is bad in a whole different way," the actress told TVLine. "Get ready to have your guts feel like they're coming out of you, because it is truly harrowing."

As avid fans of the show know, Meredith is no stranger to violence and life-threatening scenarios. Over the course of the popular ABC series, she has nearly drowned, survived a plane crash that killed her other half-sister Lexie (Chyler Leigh), been held at gunpoint, handled a live bomb, almost died during childbirth, and generally "had a lot of brushes with death," as McCreary put it.

But, as the actress explained, this time will be different. In previous situations in which Meredith found herself on the brink of death, she was always - even if just a little bit - in control of the situation. "She could save herself in some way, or make a choice that might help herself," McCreary said, according to TVLine. "But in this case she's physically impaired in a way that she has not been before," she teased.

The Season 12 midseason premiere of "Grey's Anatomy" will be directed by Academy Award-winning actor/director Denzel Washington.

A recently released trailer shows that Meredith was attacked by a patient. Although it answers the question of what happened to her, it raises a few more. Why did the patient attack her? Will any of the other doctors be similarly hurt? Who was the patient? How injured is she?

Find out when "Grey's Anatomy" Season 12 returns on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
