'Guardians of the Galaxy' 2 Sequel News: Director James Gunn Explains Future of Series

Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" was a blockbuster hit considering that not many people knew who the Guardians were. Now, director James Gunn is giving away hints at his plans for the sequel, which is scheduled for a 2017 release, and other projects like spin-offs. Also, he reveals alternate endings which were cut from the film.

Gunn has mentioned that he wants to make sure that the sequel continues to be true to the Marvel comics. The director was also asked which minor characters he would like to explore in the future films to which Gunn replied with, "Yondu and Kraglin, the Ravagers. And I love Nebula. I think that she is underutilized in the film. I want to see more of her. The Collector."

He's also said that he wants to avoid having to repeat mistakes he made in the first movie, or having to make the sequel into just another comic book movie.

"I think Guardians, at the end, is not the structure of a comic book movie, it's not the structure of an action-adventure, it's not the structure of a comedy. It's the structure of a family drama. So how does that play itself out?" he said.

As for the alternate endings, Gunn described that the final montage of the film originally contained three extra characters: The Collector played by Benicio Del Toro, Nebul played by Karen Gillan, and Grandpa Quill played by Gregg Henry.

"There are three characters that got cut out of the 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' montage: Nebua, the Collector and Grandpa Quill. Nebula and Collector we decided, at a certain point, they're kind of bad guys in the first movie. It was a real joyous experience with that finale so we though we'd keep it to the characters that were part of 'the good team,'" Gunn describes.

"Grandpa Quill we cut because he was in old age make up and we were a little afraid people wouldn't recognize that it was him from the beginning of the movie," Gunn adds. "And also, it was a pretty sad moment."
