Handgun-a-Month Law Repealed by Virginia's Governor

A law that had been instated in Virginia that limits citizens of the state to only being able to purchase one handgun a month is now being repealed by officials.

This firearm legislation was signed into a bill by Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell about two weeks ago. At the time he did not comment on the law, but stated earlier that he was in favor of repealing it.

During a meeting on Saturday with families of the victims involved in the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting the governor was asked to make an attempt at vetoing the bill by them, however the families understood that it was unlikely this would actually happen.

According to Andrew Goddard, the father of one of the many victims in the 2007 shooting, it would have been extremely hard for McDonnell not to sign the bill since he had previously agreed to do so.

The repeal was signed by the governor just three days after the recent Ohio school shooting took place that left three dead and two wounded.

Opponents of the repeal are concerned that it could raise the amount of gun violence in the state.

Goddard currently heads the Virginia Center for Public Safety as its president and is strongly opposed to this decision.

"They have not learned a ... thing," said Goddard to MSN regarding the shooting in Ohio. "Here we are watching kids dying in other states, and we're going to be a purveyor of firearms for other states."

Lori Haas lost her daughter Emily at the hands of the Virginia Tech gunman. She is also extremely disappointed in the McDonnell's actions.

"Getting rid of the one-handgun-a-month law will make it easier for gun traffickers to purchase handguns in bulk," she said in a written statement. "There have been too many tragedies in other states fueled by guns that come from Virginia, and this will only make the situation worse."
