'Hannibal' Season 3 News, Spoilers: Episode 'The Great Red Dragon' Introduces Serial Killer Francis Dolarhyde

NBC's hit psychological thriller-horror TV drama series "Hannibal" will take a new turn as the second part of its current third season commences by introducing one of the most iconic characters Thomas Harris has created.

Titled "The Great Red Dragon," this week's episode will welcome Richard Armitage as the infamous serial killer Francis Dolarhyde.

The character, who has been adapted straight from Harris' first novel, "Red Dragon," was brought to the big screen twice: first in 1986's film "Manhunter" and then on 2002's "Red Dragon" which saw Ralph Fiennes as Dolarhyde.

Armitage revealed that although he had thoroughly read the novel, he didn't watch the two live-action adaptations for a reason:

"If it had been done once then maybe I would have looked at it, but it was done twice. They're both actors that I admire, but at the same time I wanted to just be free of what they'd done," he told Zap2It. "Also I didn't want to see another interpretation of Reba McClane because I, as the character, was about to meet my Reba McClane. I didn't want to be informed by other manifestations of that, so I left it alone."

McClane, whom Dolarhyde falls in love with, is played by "True Blood" star Rutina Wesley in the NBC series. It is through this blind character that Dolarhyde began to feel empathy, which he was devoid of before.

Armitage further revealed to the media outlet that Dolarhyde will appear for six episodes as guest character. The actor meanwhile shared the sad sentiment of hearing that the network has opted to cancel the show. However, he remains hopeful that the small screen program will continue in some capacity.

"I had every hope that the show would find a fourth season or a new home — I still live with that hope for them," he said.

"Hannibal" Season 3 Episode 8 airs this Saturday, July 25, at 10 p.m. on NBC.
