Meanwhile, the National Running Day website said that Wednesday's holiday sees "runners everywhere declaring their passion for running."

"Wherever we are and whomever we're with, we run- fast or slow, alone or with others, all over town or just around the block," continued the site.

"It is a coast-to-coast celebration of a sport and activity that's simple, inexpensive and fun. It's the perfect way for longtime runners to reaffirm their love of running and for beginners to kick off a lifetime and life-changing commitment."

As a result of the holiday, Happy National Running Day became a trending topic among Twitter users.

"Happy National Running Day," started Team Runner For Life. "Be sure to get out there and run today. No matter how fast or how far you go you are lapping everyone on the couch."

Twitter user, Tatyna posted, "What are you doing to celebrate National Running Day? I know what I am doing!"

"Enjoy your run today," added twitter user, Bart.

Nevertheless, running is associated with several injuries due to its high-impact nature. When considering making running a hobby, be sure to consult your doctor about the risks.
