HBO Cancels Three Shows While Worst Rated Gets Renewed

HBO has abruptly canceled three shows to pave the way for new ones in 2012, and viewers appear to have mixed reactions.

The shows which faced the chopping block were “Hung,” “Bored to Death,” and “How to Make It in America,” which are all believed to have produced dismal ratings.

On a brighter note, "Enlightened," starring renowned actress Laura Dern, was renewed despite its poor ratings, according to The New York Times.

Drawing in around 200,000 viewers, "Enlightened" had the least viewers among the four shows, but was likely renewed because it received two Golden Globe nominations.

While the response amongst fans has varied, some media outlets like Gawker.com weighed in. The news website ran a story with the headline, "HBO Cancels All the Good Shows, Renews the Crappy One.”

One Twitter user had a more optimistic response to cancellations.

"Good shows may be gone, but new good ones coming soon! @hbo @nytimes," Geena Urango tweeted.

“Bored to Death” stars Jason Schwartzman, who poses as a private detective in Brooklyn, and the show reportedly suffered a significant decline in viewers, ultimately resulting in its cancellation.

“How to Make it in America,” is about the New York City fashion world, and after two seasons of declining viewership, it, too was axed.

"Hung,” which starred Thomas Jane, was a comedy which followed the life of a male prostitute, but it failed to impress after three seasons.

The pay TV network, which reportedly had scheduling conflicts, has announced that it plans to introduce a string of new shows in 2012.

New programs will include British comedian Ricky Gervais' "Life's Too Short" and Australian comedian Chris Lilley's hit show “Angry Boys.”
