The Leftovers Season 2? HBO Renewed or Canceled?

HBO has renewed 'The Leftovers" for its second season.

The show, which is currently on its first season, has remained a steady performer for the network. Though as of the moment, the show has not reached the same level of ratings that "Game of Thrones" has, it garnered 1.8 million viewers on its pilot episode, and has remained consistent ever since.

The show, which was created by Damon Lindelof ("Lost") and Tom Perotta, is based on the latter's novel of the same title. The story takes place three years after a global "rapture" which caused the unexplained disappearance of two percent of the world's population. It focuses on the ones that were left behind in the fictional town of Mapleton, New York.

The show stars Justin Theroux as Kevin Garvey, Mapleton's chief of police and father of two; Amy Brenneman as Laurie Garvey, Kevin's wife who left her entire family to join a cult called the Guilty Remnant; Christopher Eccleston as Matt Jamison, a former reverend and current editor of his self-published tabloid; and Liv Tyler is Megan Abbott, a woman who was about to get married when she becomes a target of the Guilty Remnant.

According to Screenrant.com, HBO has often given its shows a greater chance to prove themselves compared to other networks, and considering the team the network has in the cast and crew of "The Leftovers," it makes sense that the network would give it a chance to grow.

"The Leftovers" airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on HBO. The final episode of season 1 airs on Sept. 17.
