Heat Wave Maps, Forecasts for July 2016: Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore

Deadly Heat Wave Envelopes East Coast

The scorching heat that the East Coast is experiencing now could be adding to the rising tempers at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. The severe weather condition in the area will stay until after the convention.

Philadelphia went as high as 96 degrees Monday, giving them heavy rain, flooding, thunderstorms and lightning, as well as gusty winds, and forecasters said that the same pattern is expected to continue until Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service, the oppressive heat will prevail from North Carolina to New York and is expected to reach as high as 95 degrees. The latest weather bulletin said that the heat index could go as high as 110 degrees and would last for a few more days.

New Yorkers are to experience temperatures that will still be in the mid-90s at least through Thursday, but real feel temperatures will be well within the three digits. Expect to get a respite from downpours that will last up to half an hour, but residents were warned that the extreme heat they are experiencing is deadly.

For the first time in 2013, Baltimore is experiencing temperatures that are hitting triple digits. Because of the sweltering heat, the Baltimore City Health Department has issued a code red advisory as three heat-related deaths have been monitored in Maryland.

Washington D.C. is not spared from the incredibly hot weather. Monday is the hottest in the area with temperatures possibly hitting 102 degrees. The coming days may be a bit cooler by a few degrees, but the peak heat index might still reach 100 degrees or more. Thunderstorms are still expected. The forecast does not change much until Sunday—partly sunny, humid and hot.

Staying Safe

With heat wave-related deaths rising, it is important to know what to do to keep safe. Here are some of the reminders from the American Red Cross:

  • Keep cool – Stay in places with air-conditioning systems and stay in the shade when outdoors.
  • Hydrate – Always have a bottle of water with you and drink even if you are not thirsty. Beverages that contain alcohol and caffeine are to be avoided.
  • Wear light clothing – Light-colored clothes help against overheating. Slather on sunscreen when outdoors and wear hats and sunglasses.
