Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt: Penniless and Regretful After Fame
Fortune and fame has come and left Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, the married couple who formerly starred on MTV’s “The Hills.”
“What we learned is: You CAN be too famous,” Spencer reflectively told The Daily Beast. Since “The Hills” ended in 2010, the couple experienced a dramatic change, and are currently living in Spencer’s parent’s beach house to avoid paying rent.
During five years of recording the hit MTV show, Heidi and Spencer’s relationship was chronicled through fights and break-ups, mostly staged to draw in a broader audience. They would stage events and had no limit as to what they would do in order to gain more fame. The couple’s career in reality TV finally reached a breaking point when producers of the show asked Spencer to hit his sister for entertainment value.

Spencer recalled the incident, “That’s when I snapped, to the point when I said- and this is when the producers got scared of me- ‘You want me to punch my sister in the face? Are you trying to get me to kill you?’ I didn’t say, ‘I’m killing you.’ If I did, MTV would have had me arrested.”
Their employment and good senses fled from them as Spencer and Heidi wasted millions of dollars on clothes, cars, houses, and on Heidi’s attempt at a career in music. “My million-dollar wardrobe-I would never wear that again, they’re props,” said Heidi.
In attempts to enhance her popularity, Heidi underwent over ten plastic surgery procedures that have drastically changed the appearance of her face and body.
“Obviously I wish I didn’t do it, I got too caught up in Hollywood, being so into myself and my image,” she said.
“We were living each other’s mistakes. Everything we were doing, in retrospect, was a mistake. The second we continued on our quest for fame was a mistake,” Heidi told the online newspaper.
Spencer continued to explain their view of reality TV, “This isn’t a business. That is the big thing I didn’t get. Reality TV is not a career. Anyone who says, ‘Oh, you can have a career in reality’-that is a lie.”
These days, the disillusioned duo struggle to find jobs, and spend their time at home; a much different lifestyle than that of their days spent on “The Hills.” Spencer reveals that their life is “like what 70-year-olds do, we’re reading a lot of books.”
