A Houston airport shooting has sparked panic on Thursday, however, after initial investigations it appears as though the shooting was a suicide, according to local media reports.
Earlier on Thursday multiple reports of gunshots were registered at Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport on social media sites.
In the immediate panic and aftermath it was unclear what had happened.
One local news source reported that the shots fired were confirmed by the Houston Police Department.
It later emerged, according to KHOU-TV, that a person fired shots near a security checkpoint in Terminal B of the airport on the north side of Houston.
One person was reportedly dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
On Twitter, Fox Houston also reported that the homicide division of local law enforcement had been called to the scene. However, that network could not confirm that the homicide had been self-inflicted.
"#Breaking News: HPD Homicide has been called to the Bush Airport Terminal B. They have not been told if it was [self] inflicted[.]"
Some witnesses from the airport said that there was a single individual wounded, and that the gunshot was fatal.
One Twitter witness said: "Houston IAH airport @nycaviation RT @gnewburn: Two shots. Then a pause. Then a lot of shots."
It has also been reported that Houston Bush Intercontinental Airport has been put on lockdown following the shooting and fatality, and that all flights arriving and departing have been blocked while police complete their investigations.
