Huawei Mate 10 Release Date, Price News: U.S. Launching Should Follow

Huawei launched its new flagship smartphone, the Mate 10, that comes with its own artificial intelligence (AI) chip on Monday.

The company unveiled the Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, and the special edition Porsche Design Mate 10 at an event in Munich, Germany. Its top-tier feature, which should place it at par with Apple and Samsung's flagships, is the Kirin 970.

"The Mate series has been their flagship series, they are trying to bring more AI baked into the phone like what Apple is trying to do with iPhone X," Neil Shah, research director of devices and ecosystems at Counterpoint Research, told CNBC about the series.

"It shows that the rate of R&D (research and development) and commercialization are very fast, and Huawei has caught up to Apple," she added. "Huawei is launching the Mate 10 with AI chip ahead of the iPhone. It is a commendable achievement."

The AI chipset was launched earlier this year. The Huawei smartphones are the first devices to come with the chip.

The Kirin 970 processes function on the smartphone instead of the cloud, which should make it faster. The demonstration also suggested that the AI is capable of recognizing objects that users want to photograph. It will also automatically adjust aspects such as like. Moreover, the company claims the AI is able to recognize 2005 images per minute.

Mate 10 comes with a 5.9-inch display with a 2,540x1,440 resolution. The Mate 10 Pro and the Porsche Design will have a 6-inch screen with a less sharp display, 2,160x1,080.

In terms of RAM, the Mate 10 comes short with only 4 GB. It only has 64 GB of internal storage. The Pro model, on the other hand, offers 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, while the Porsche model features 6 GB of RAM and a massive 256 GB storage capacity.

The Huawei Mate 10 should be available later this month in over 15 countries, including Spain, Singapore, and Australia. The U.S., however, is not one of them. Its release in the country is expected to follow at a later date.

Huawei Mate 10 is priced at $825 while the Mate 10 Pro costs $943.
