IFA 2016 News and Updates: What to Expect from Samsung, Sony, and Other Manufacturers in this Year's Event

A Host of New Smartphones, Smartwatches, Tablets, and Other Technologies are Bound for Berlin

The IFA 2016 (stands for Internationale Funkausstellung) is the largest European consumer electronics trade show held annually in Berlin. This year, it will be held from September 2-7, with huge tech companies showcasing their new technologies.

Samsung

Samsung is set to unveil their new smartwatch at the IFA, the Gear S3. With the Gear S2 having been launched last year at the IFA, it is only fitting for its successor to follow suit. The Gear S3 is set to launch with three variants—the Gear S3 Classic, Gear S3 Frontier, and the Gear S3 Explorer. The Galaxy Tab S3 is also rumored to make an appearance as an update to the Tab S2. Aside from the new smartwatch and tablet, Samsung will also showcase a new refrigerator and gaming monitors.

Sony

Sony is expected to hold a PlayStation VR exhibit in preparation for its December event. It is also rumored to unveil two new smartphones in the Xperia lineup – the Xperia XZ and the Xperia X Compact. Both phones are said to be packing flagship specs of the usual Snapdragon 820 and 4GB of RAM. The main difference is the display, with the Xperia XZ sporting a 5.2-inch screen, while the Xperia X Compact has a 4.6-inch one. Aside from the smartphones and VR, Sony is expected to showcase their televisions, cameras, and headphones, including the Xperia Eye camera and the Xperia Ear Bluetooth headset.

LG

LG is rumored to release the new LG G Flex 3 at the IFA. It will come with a 6-inches curved display with Quad-HD resolution. It will also sport a gamut of flagship internals with the Snapdragon 820 and 4GB of RAM. It may also launch a new luxury smartwatch similar to the 23-karat gold Watch Urbane Luxe last year. LG will also launch a new set of bluetooth speakers, a new TV lineup with HDR technology and a 21:9 curved gaming displays.

Huawei

The up and coming Chinese company shook IFA last year with the Mate S. This year, the Huawei Nova will be launched with a 5.5-inch 1080p display, a Kirin 960 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 16-megapixel camera. The MediaPad M3 is also expected to bolster the mid-range tablet market. Aside from these mobile devices, Huawei is also expected to announce a new smartwatch lineup, the Huawei Watch 2.

HTC

Despite being rather busy with the new Nexus phones, HTC is rumored to be unveiling its own smartphone. The HTC A9 successor, the A9s, is expected to make an appearance at this year's IFA. Not much is known about the device. HTC may also exhibit their Vive VR headset.

Other Manufacturers

Lenovo/Motorola will launch new Moto Mods for their Moto Z lineup, as well as a new tablet and a lineup of bendable devices. Asus is also expected to unveil their new smartwatch, the ZenWatch 3. Acer will introduce a new thin laptop, and Panasonic will showcase a new television lineup.
