Immigration Reform News 2017: Trump To Extend DACA Legislation

The March 5 deadline for the protection of the young undocumented immigrants will be extended by US president Donald Trump.

A report from Chicago Tribune claimed that the president had already decided that he is willing to extend the deadline if the Congress failed to come up with a legislation that could extend the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) for the protection of undocumented young immigrants, according to Oklahoma Republican Senator James Lankford.

"The president's comment to me was that, 'We put a six-month deadline out there. Let's work it out. If we can't get it worked out in six months, we'll give it some more time, but we've got to get this worked out legislatively,'" the senator stated during a recent town hall event. However, Lankford stated that Trump did not specify exactly how long the extension could last.

The senator also claimed that the president was aiming for a legislative solution for DACA since the Congress only has six months to reevaluate the program.

Based on the data provided by the Department of Homeland Security, there are around 690,000 young immigrants who are under the DACA immigration status. This means that all these individuals could be affected once the president decided to put an end to the 2012 executive order that was created by former president Barack Obama.

In another news, Trump also reiterated the need for the funding of a wall that will prevent illegal immigrants from coming to the US.

During a recent press conference on Monday that was reported by Breitbart, Trump remained firm about his vision of coming up with a wall that could bar all prospective illegal immigrants from passing through the borders. This is his way of making sure that the country will not be infiltrated by crime and illegal drugs.

Trump also pointed out that the wall could be the country's best line of defense against stopping illegal immigration and drug problems, which is why he wants it to become a major priority.

However, the Democrats have yet to reveal their reaction about Trump's urgency for a new wall.
