"After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction," the statement reads.

Previous rumors meanwhile pointed out that producers of the project would likely to follow the current multi-installment franchise trend which means there might be two or more reiterations of the title in the coming future.

Under the direction of Emmerich, "Independence Day 2" will see returning stars Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch, Brent Spiner and Bill Pullman with newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsburg, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward, Joey King, Jessie Usher, and William Fichner.

"Independence Day 2" is said to open in theaters on June 24, 2016.
