iPad 3 Sales Reach 1 Million During Launch Weekend?

Apple's CEO Tim Cook has reported that the new iPad's sales were somewhere between 500,000 and 1 million units during its launch weekend.

AT&T also reported that the new iPad set new single-day sales records on the day of its launch.

"On Friday, March 16, AT&T set a new single-day record for its iPad sales and activations, demonstrating robust demand for the new iPad on the nation's largest 4G network, covering nearly 250 million people," said the carrier in a press release.

Verizon, the other major carrier of the tablet, released a slightly less enthusiastic sales report.

"We are quite pleased with sales, which have been brisk through the weekend, and we are excited to offer customers an alternative that lets them enjoy their new iPad on the nation's largest 4G LTE network," said the carrier in a statement.

The new iPad was released on March 16 in the U.S., Canada, U.K., France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia.

Apple began taking pre-orders for it the day the company debuted the device at a media event in San Francisco.

The third generation iPad features a high definition Retina display that has 2048x1536 pixel resolution with 4G LTE connectivity. The device also includes a dual-core A5X chip that has a quad-core graphics processor specifically for gaming.

Other specifications on the new iPad include a 5-megapixel camera capable of recording in HD and a battery capable of lasting 9 hours on 4G and 10 hours on 3G. The device still functions on 3G networks and can also work as a personal hotspot for its owners. However, this feature is only available on specific service providers.

It is available on AT&T and Verizon along with various other carriers throughout Canada and the rest of the globe.
