iPhone 4S Release Date: Launches Today

The iPhone 4S launches today. Finally, the long anticipated fifth generation Apple smartphone will be available to the general public in Apple store locations and network carrier retail outlets.

Pre-orders for the device began last Friday, and the new iOS 5 software became available for free download on Oct. 12.

The iPhone 4S comes with an A5 chip and iOS 5 pre-installed.

Apple promises the smartphone will be twice as fast as its predecessor, the iPhone 4.

The iPhone 4S antenna, along with some of the other new hardware including a 1GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor allows the phone to perform at speeds which surpass that of other devices already working off 4G networks.

Apple chose to keep the iPhone 4S on the 3G network due to the fact that 4G technology is yet to be perfected.

The new iPhone also includes an 8-megapixel camera which is capable of filming in 1080p HD.

Apple reported earlier in the week that it sold over 1,000,000 pre-orders for the iPhone 4S.

It comes in three memory capacities including a 16GB, 32GB and a 64GB version.

The look and shape of the iPhone 4S has not changed at all from the iPhone 4, so Apple users who had a case for their iPhone 4 can probably use it with the next generation version.

The iPhone 4 was unveiled on Oct. 4 at Apple’s Let’s Talk iPhone event where the company also debuted iOS 5, an 8GB iPhone 4 and the white iPod Touch model.

The iPhone 4S is available for purchase through AT&T, Verizon and Sprint.

With an agreement, the 16GB model will cost $199, the 32GB $299 and the 64GB will go for $399.
