iPhone 5 Release Date: Samsung Outsells iPhone This Quarter

Samsung has out sold Apple in smartphone sales this quarter, according to Reuters.

“After just one quarter at the top spot, Apple slipped behind Samsung to the second position and captured 15 percent share,” wrote Strategy Analytics. “Apple’s global smartphone growth rate slowed to just 21 percent annually in Q3 2011, its lowest in two years.”

Apple’s rival reported its quarterly earning earnings yesterday that showed Samsung outselling the iPhone by nearly 10 million units.

Apple shipped 17.07 million iPhones in the September quarter, dropping nearly 3 million from the June quarter where the company sold 20.34 million.

Apple was leading the pack in that quarter, but Samsung reported selling 27.8 million units beating out Apple and other competitors this time around.

Strategy Analyst's commented on Samsung being the highest selling smartphone vendor by attributing this feat to “a blend of elegant hardware designs, popular Android services, memorable sub-brands and extensive global distribution.”

They also attribute Apple’s lower sales to the release of the iPhone 4S.

“We believe Apple’s growth during the third quarter was affected by consumers and operators awaiting the launch of the new iPhone 4S in the fourth quarter, volatile economic conditions in several key countries, and tougher competition from Samsung’s popular Galaxy S2 model.”

The iPhone 4S was released in October so customers could have been waiting for the new model to launch in order to purchase the iPhone, and Samsung’s Galaxy S2 has been extremely successful in terms of performance and sales which could have also hurt Apple for this past quarter.

Apple also came in fifth place in Strategy Analytic’s worldwide cell phone rankings with China’s ZTE passing it up becoming the world’s fourth largest cell phone vendor by volume.

Apple has a chance at reclaiming these positions in the last quarter since the iPhone 4S has had the greatest debut in terms of sales for the iPhone yet.
